Total Failure or Just the End of an Era?
When you start something out of pure necessity, passion flows differently. Back in 2014, finding a space to post a simple personal ad for the gay community in Romania was nearly impossible. Platforms back then would instantly delete such posts, leaving no room for authentic connection. That is exactly why I built my very first website, Anunțul Gay România. It wasn't created as a business or a cash grab, but out of an obligation to create a space that simply didn't exist.
For a long time, it was a massive success. The platform was so overwhelmed with activity that I constantly had to delete older ads just to free up server space for new ones. Seeing that genuine need being met made every effort worth it, despite all the technical and personal headaches that came with managing it.
It reminds me so much of how Twitter morphed into X. What started as a peaceful "Birdia," where a little bird simply chirped text updates, family photos, and news, eventually transformed into a completely different network—buried under age-restricted warnings, adult content, and paid subscription models similar to private Telegram groups. Just like that bird lost its original identity, online spaces evolve, and not always in the direction we expect.
Fast forward to recent times: I decided to launch a new, international version of that same original concept. But the digital landscape has completely shifted. After a full year online—and an automatic subscription renewal later—the result is clear: under 200 visits, barely any new ads, and zero momentum. Whether it lacked aggressive promotion or simply couldn't find its audience in today's crowded internet, the project failed to lift off. Deciding to let go of a personal project isn't easy, but holding onto something just because it worked a decade ago makes no sense.
